#1 Smoke Detectors Smoke detectors save lives! It's the single most important thing you can do to for fire safety. You should have one on each level of your home and make sure you cover all sleeping areas in your home. If your detectors are battery operated, make sure the batteries are fresh. All smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years.
