#1 Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors save lives! It's the single most important thing you can do to for fire safety. You should have one on each level of your home and make sure you cover all sleeping areas in your home. If your detectors are battery operated, make sure the batteries are fresh. All smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years.

#2 Escape Plan and Meeting Place
Every family should discuss an escape plan and where to meet outside the home. The escape plan should include alternate routes as fire and/or smoke may block one or more routes through your home. Should someone be trapped by fire or smoke, please let 911 know when you report the fire. We don't waste any time, but entrapment knowledge will help responding firefighters prepare while in-transit.

#3 Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Every home needs at least one. Carbon monoxide has no odor and is undetectable to your senses. It can have many sources in and around the home. Carbon monoxide exposure can kill!

#4 Lithium-ion Batteries
They are becoming more and more common place in our homes. However, they do have a risk factor. Be careful when charging and storing these batteries. Do not overcharge them. If possible, store them in a safe location that isn't exposed to excessive heating. Do not replace original batteries with cheap off brand batteries. These batteries have been suspected as the source of several recent fires in Penn Township.
